Chapter 13: A Day Out Shopping

16 3 月, 2025

The only way to save Zoe’s life was a kidney transplant, but the surgery would cost 300,000 yuan. Avery Bennett had been sending every penny she could save back to the orphanage each month.

When Ivy Black asked about it, Avery’s face was clouded with worry. “We’re all just working regular jobs. Even though we’ve been cutting back on expenses, we still can’t scrape together enough. Thankfully, I got a promotion this year, so I can send a bit more. I called Director Liu yesterday, and we’re still short by 100,000 yuan. I’ve done the math, and it might take until next year to gather the full amount.”

Ivy was surprised. “Are you the only one trying to raise the money?”

Avery awkwardly picked at the glass noodles in her spicy hot pot. “The others are chipping in too, but maybe the guys have more expenses. They haven’t been able to contribute as much.”

“Honestly, it feels like you’re the only one who really cares. The others might send some money back, but it’s more like a token gesture. You’re the only one who treats Zoe like your own sister.”

Avery’s gaze drifted off. “Zoe… she’s had such a hard life.”

Ivy sighed. “I think you’re the one who’s had a hard life!”

“How can you say that? I have a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear. I’m not pitiful. Ivy, you don’t understand how grateful I am to the orphanage. Without it, I wouldn’t even be here.”

“Well, it’s a shame you didn’t see our CEO the other day. He’s such a handsome man. If he took a liking to you, you wouldn’t have to worry about Zoe’s surgery anymore.”

Avery’s cheeks flushed, and she stayed silent.

“I’m serious! I’ve never seen a man that good-looking, not even celebrities can compare!”

“Stop it. I’m with Eli.”

“Does he see how hard you’re working and not even think about helping with the surgery? He’s the CEO of a company, after all. 300,000 yuan isn’t a huge amount for him, is it?”

“This is my responsibility, not his. How can I expect him to take it on? Besides, his company hasn’t been doing well lately. He’s already overwhelmed. I can’t add to his troubles.”

Truthfully, she had mentioned Zoe’s situation to him before, but he hadn’t offered to help. Avery had let it go and never brought it up again.

After all, Zoe was no relation to him. She couldn’t blame him for not stepping in. Still, the disappointment lingered, like a thorn in her heart. Every time she thought about her future with Eli, a sense of unease crept in.

Fortunately, they were both still young, and the question of a lifelong commitment wasn’t on the table yet.

After filling their stomachs, Ivy invited Avery to go shopping. Avery mentally calculated her recent savings and finally allowed herself a small indulgence.

The bustling streets were alive with energy. Even just watching the crowds felt like a rare treat.

They loved browsing the small shops along the street. With a keen eye, they could often find unique and affordable clothes.

Ivy picked out two items and was thrilled. Suddenly, she excitedly held up a white maxi dress. “Avery, look at this! It would look amazing on you.”

The dress was made of chiffon, with a flowing, voluminous skirt that felt like a soft mist against Avery’s fingers. The design was simple, yet it had a dreamy, ethereal quality.

Aside from a scattering of rhinestones on the chest, the dress had no other embellishments.
“Look at this! It’s perfect for you,” Ivy said, holding up the dress with a smile.
